RORY PECK AWARDS 2010

Dmitry Zavadsky Foundation Press Service | 20 July 2010

The Rory Peck Awards is a highly respected international competition that honours excellence in freelance news and current affairs camerawork.

Established in 1995, it is the only awards competition to celebrate the skill and endeavour of freelance camera operators around the world and demonstrates why they are so important to the newsgathering and broadcast industries. Each year, the awards attract widespread media coverage across television, web and print, including annual dedicated broadcasts on BBC News Channel, Channel 4 (UK), CNN, Reuters and Eurovision.
The Rory Peck Awards are open to freelance camera operators in all countries. Self-funded work is welcome, as are entries from local freelancers, especially those in regions where it is difficult to operate. The competitive categories are:

The Rory Peck Award for News
Honours freelance camerawork in the coverage of a news event where the focus is on the immediacy of the story. Rushes / un-voiced pieces are accepted in this category.
Maximum duration 10 minutes.

The Rory Peck Award for Features
Honours freelance camerawork in news and current affairs features: in-depth pieces which look beyond the immediacy of a news story. Maximum duration 60 minutes.

The Sony Professional Impact Award
Honours freelance camerawork in either news or current affairs which raises humanitarian issues and whose broadcast has had an international impact or contributed to a change in perception or policy. Maximum duration 60 minutes.

In all categories the awards recognise:

• quality of camerawork
• individual endeavour and initiative
• journalistic ability and integrity
• editorial judgement

All entries must have had their first broadcast (television, agency feed, recognised media web publisher) between 1 August 2009 and 31 July 2010.

The Rory Peck Awards is the main fund-raiser for The Rory Peck Trust, a UK-based charity that supports freelance newsgatherers and their families worldwide in times of need and promotes their welfare and safety.
